1998年11月に陸上自衛隊と米陸軍の日米共同訓練が南九州の演習場で開催されました。
米軍機材の輸送のために、いろんな米軍輸送機が新田原基地に飛来しました。

この日は、新田原基地にC17が飛来していました。
初めて見るC17に大喜びしました。
この機首には「スピリット オブ ベルリン」の文字が記入されていました。

このC17は、映画「フリー・ウィリー」の主役だったシャチの「ケイコ」を1998年に米オレゴン州の水族館からアイスランドに移送した機体です。
それを記念して、この機体の機首と後部ベントラルフィンの両側にシャチの絵が描かれました。
この映画をきっかけに、自然保護団体などからシャチの「ケイコ」を野生帰還運動が広がりました。「ケイコ」は野生に復帰するための訓練を経て、アイスランド沖の大西洋に放たれたそうです。

training ground in Southern Kyushu.
Various
US Air Force transport aircraft flew to
Nyutabaru base to
transport US military equipment.

this day, C17 was flying to Nyutabaru
base.
I
was delighted to see C17 for the first
time.
The
letters "Spirit of Berlin" were
written on this nose.

About the origin of "Spirit of
Berlin"
This
C17 is the aircraft that transferred the
orca "Keiko", which was the
protagonist of the movie "Free Willy",
from the aquarium in Oregon, USA to
Iceland in 1998.
To
commemorate this, paintings of orca were
drawn on both sides of the nose and rear
ventral fins of the aircraft.
With
this movie as a trigger, a movement to
return the orca "Keiko" to the
wild has spread from nature conservation
groups. "Keiko" was released to
the Atlantic Ocean off Iceland after
training to return to the wild.
