1998年4月に新田原基地にて撮影です。
当時は、毎年５月の戦技競技会前になると、
新田原基地に３０２ＳＱのＦ４が飛来して訓練していました。
特攻花が基地内一面に咲きます。
マニアにとって楽しい時期でした。

大平洋戦争末期、新田原基地から飛び立つ若き特攻隊員に地元の娘たちが情をこめて贈った
オオキンケイギクの花束の種子が落ち新田原基地周辺で見られるようになったことから、
この花を「特攻花」と呼ぶようになったといわれています。
