航空自衛隊のベテランパイロット2名がT-33Aによる年次飛行から入間基地への帰投中にエンジントラブルが発生した。
墜落の直前まで2名は基地手前にある入間川沿いの住宅地や学校を避けるために操縦を続けた結果、脱出が遅れ共に殉職した。　
技量に優れたベテランパイロットが服務の宣誓通り「危険を顧みず」に被害の低減に努めたことが次第に明らかになり、反響が広がった。

事故翌日の11月23日に、残存している全T-33A及び入間基地の緊急用を除く全機の飛行停止命令処分が課される。
11月29日に入間基地の航空機飛行停止命令は解除されたがT-33Aの飛行停止命令は継続され、そのまま翌年2000年（平成12年）6月に全機除籍された。

Two veteran Air Self-Defense Force pilots were returning to Iruma Air Base from their annual T-33A flight when engine trouble occurred.
Until just before the crash, the two pilots continued to maneuver to avoid residential areas and schools along the Iruma River in front of the base, resulting in a delay in evacuation and both lost their lives in the line of duty. 　
As it gradually became clear that the highly skilled veteran pilot had ``regardless of danger'' committed himself to reducing the damage, just as he had sworn in his oath of service, the incident received widespread attention.

On November 23, the day after the accident, all remaining T-33As and all aircraft except for emergency use at Iruma Air Base were ordered to cease flying.
Although the order to ground aircraft at Iruma Air Base was lifted on November 29, the order to ground the T-33A continued, and all aircraft were removed from the register in June 2000 the following year.
