is an F4EJ Kai of the 302nd Squadron based at
Naha Air Base of Okinawa Island , photographed at
Nyutabaru Air Base in 2006. In preparation for
their participation in that year's Air Self-Defense
Force Combat Skills Competition, these aircraft
had the image of a "shisa" (a lion said
to have been brought from the ancient Orient),
the traditional guardian deity of Okinawa Island,
painted on their noses instead of the shark's
face. |

is a display aircraft with a shark mouth, 301SQ-F4EJ
kai, that flew from Hyakuri Air Base to the JASDF-Tsuiki
Air Base Air Show held on December 8, 2019. |

| This
is an RF4EJ belonging to Hyakuri Air Base,
photographed at JASDF-Nyutabaru Air Base on
November 12, 2004. This year was the 50th
anniversary of the founding of JASDF, so perhaps
the shark teeth were painted on the nose of the
RF4EJ. |

| On December 8,
2019, the 301SQ's soon-to-be-retired F4EJ
commemorative paint job and 501SQ-RF4E flew from
Hyakuri Air Base to the Nyutabaru Air Base Air
Show and were displayed on the apron. This was the
301SQ-F4EJ's first homecoming demo flight at the
base in three years since it left Nyutabaru Air
Base in October 2016.To ensure that we, the
general spectators, could see it well, this
aircraft made repeated slow circles around the
north side of the apron (tower side) where the
light was coming from, so that its back could be
seen. |

This
is F4EJ kai No. 400 of 301SQ, photographed at
Nyutabaru Air Base on December 10, 1997. An
illustration commemorating the 40th anniversary
of the opening of Nyutabaru Air Base was painted
on the nose.
The serial number of No. 400 was changed to 40
and surrounded by a laurel wreath, and the
amusing illustration shows the F4 mascot, Spook,
emitting the word "Kamehameha." "Kamehameha"
is an energy blast fired by the main character of
the popular Japanese anime "Dragon Ball." |

| This
is a photo of the F4EJ of the 301SQ taken at the
Nyutabaru Air Base Air Show in November 1989.
These aircraft participated in the air combat
competition held in November of that year, and
each aircraft had a different shark mouth shape. |

These
are RF4Es of the 501st SQ that flew from Hyakuri
Air Base, photographed at JASDF Tsuiki and
Nyutabaru Air Base in 1994.
They had illustrations of beast gods from Chinese
mythology on the noses of the aircraft.
In 1994, the 501st Squadron painted illustrations
of the "Five Beast Gods" on the noses
of five RF4Es.
The guardian deity of the center of heaven is the
"Kirin (No. 914)", and there are four
beast gods protecting the four sides of heaven,
with the "Turtle God (No. 906)"
protecting the northern heaven, the "White
Tiger (No. 907)" protecting the western
heaven, the "Phoenix (No. 909)"
protecting the southern heaven, and the "Blue
Dragon" protecting the eastern heaven. |

| This is a photo of
the F4EJ of the 301SQ taken at the Nyutabaru Air
Base in 1990-1991. These aircraft competed in an
aerial combat competition in 1990, with each
aircraft sporting a different shark mouth shape. |

| These
photos of the 301SQ-F4EJ Kai taking off were
taken at JASDF Nyutabaru Base in the fall of 2001. |

This
is the takeoff of a 301SQ-F4EJ kai with a "JAQ-1
surface target" attached under its fuselage
in October 2006. After this, F4EJs equipped with
dummy bombs take off following this aircraft.
The JAQ-1 can be mounted on F4EJ/kai and F1
fighter planes. When this target is dropped into
the sea, a large target automatically unfolds on
the surface of the water, and a large triangular
tent-like target appears. |

| This photo was
taken at Nyutabaru Air Base in March 2008. The
301SQ-F4EJ Kai with a dummy bomb attached to the
underside of the fuselage took off. These three F4EJ
Kai took off following an F4EJ with a JAQ-1
surface target attached. |

| This
is a 301SQ-F4EJ Kai equipped with a simulated
anti-ship missile, photographed at the JASDF's
Nyutabaru Air Base in April 2003. In the
background of the first photo, you can see F15Js
flying in from Chitose Air Base. Around this time,
the JASDF began conducting aerial refueling
training with the US Air Force in preparation for
the introduction of the KC767 tanker aircraft in
2008. Incidentally, the F4EJ did not have aerial
refueling capability from the beginning due to
political reasons. |

| This
photo was taken at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base, of a
301SQ-F4EJ towing a dart target.The 301Sq began
deploying the F4EJ "Kai" which had been
upgraded to improve its capabilities in mid-1991.
However, until around 2000, a few unupgraded F4EJs
remained, and they continued to perform missions
such as towing dart targets. |

These
photos were taken at the JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base
of the 301SQ-F4EJ Kai towing an AGTS (Aerial
Gunnery Target System).
This AGTS is a target towing device used for
machine gun firing training. Since the F4EJ,
which was capable of towing dart targets, was
retired by around 2000, this AGTS, which can be
installed on the F-15J/DJ and F-4EJ Kai, became
the standard target. |

This
photo was taken on July 1, 1986 at JASDF-Nyutabaru
Base of a 301SQ-F4EJ equipped with a J/ALQ-6 ECM
pod.
The J/ALQ-6 ECM pod is a jamming pod made in
Japan for the F-4EJ that was experimentally
developed in 1982. There are only a few F4EJs
that can be equipped with it, and I have only
seen it twice. |

These
are F4EJs fitted with "dust collection pods."
"Dust collection pods" are devices that
measure the nuclide and radioactivity
concentration of radioactive material contained
in dust in the air at different altitudes. Inside
the pods are filters that collect airborne dust,
which is then brought back to the base from the
sky and analyzed by a specialist institution. |

is a 302SQ-F4EJ Kai equipped with a mock anti-ship
missile and a ceremonial travel pod (a former F104
drop tank) at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on
February 21, 1995. This aircraft stopped at
Nyutabaru Air Base on its way to cross-country
from Naha Air Base to Hyakuri Air Base. |
