This photo was taken at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on 22/07/1992 of a formation of 301SQ-F4EJ Kai taking off.A small dummy bomb was being carried under the left wing.

This is a taxiing RW25 end of 301SQ-F4EJ Kai belonging to Nyutabaru Air Base, photographed at Tsuiki Air Base on October 10, 1992.That year, two aircraft were produced, painted in forest camouflage imitating F1 fighter planes. For some reason, the "light and dark pine needle color" parts of the forest camouflage on both aircraft were inverted.

This photograph was taken at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on May 9th, 1994, of a 301SQ-F4EJ Kai landing. This year, too, two aircraft were produced, painted in forest camouflage to resemble F1 fighter planes. This year's aircraft had their vertical stabilizers painted in silhouette to make them look even more like F1 fighter planes. Also, the "light and dark pine needle color" parts of the forest camouflage on both aircraft were inverted.

This is an F4EJ Kai of 301SQ photographed at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base in May 1995.The aircraft was painted in the paint scheme for that year's combat competition.Around this time, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force's F4EJs were due for a change of official paint scheme.No. 422 had new air superiority paint, and the aircraft number and Hinomaru flag were smaller.No. 384 had a bluish matte gray oversprayed over the old official gull gray paint.

This is an F4EJ of the 301st SQ, photographed at the Nyutabaru Air Base of the JASDF around 1990.After the F4EJ of the 301st SQ was transferred from Hyakuri Air Base to Nyutabaru Air Base in February 1985, for some time the aircraft did not have shark mouths or camouflage paint.Instead, the unit showed its spirit by drawing shark mouths on a dart target machine.

This photograph was taken at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on February 24th, 1997, of 301SQ's F4EJ Kai No. 312 taking off. This aircraft had just been transferred to 301SQ from 302SQ at Naha Air Base. The nose of this aircraft still had the marks of a shark's mouth from when it participated in a combat competition when it was in 302SQ.As an enthusiast, even the traces of the shark were enough to make me overjoyed, thinking, "I've got a precious plane!!"

This photograph of 301SQ-F4EJKai No. 421 taking off in formation was taken at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base in October 1994.At that time, F4 aircraft with both old and new official paint jobs flew together.No. 421 was a participant in that year's combat competition, and had the words "SU Eaters" written on the vertical tail. This was apparently written to boost morale, saying, "We are a unit that devours the Sukhois of our hypothetical enemy nation."

This photograph of a 301SQ-F4EJ Kai preparing for takeoff was taken at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base in June-July 1994.At that time, aircraft with both the old and new official paint schemes flew together. These aircraft had a bluish matte gray oversprayed over the old gull gray official paint to resemble the new air superiority paint.No. 384 was one of the aircraft that took part in the combat competition that year, and had the words "SU Eaters" written on the vertical tail. This was apparently written to boost morale, conveying the message, "A unit that devours the Sukhois of a hypothetical enemy country."

This photograph was taken at the RW28 end of JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base, showing a 301SQ-F4EJ Kai heading for the apron after takeoff. The photo above (taken on August 21, 1992) shows the aircraft in the old official gull gray paint scheme. It probably depends on the way the light hits it, but the aircraft shines brightly and is very beautiful. The photo below (taken on July 18, 1994) shows an aircraft which has had a bluish matte gray oversprayed over the old official gull gray paint scheme to resemble the new air superiority paint scheme (aircraft painted to take part in the 1994 Combat Skills Competition). There is no shine to be seen at all.

This photo was taken in 1998 at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base of the 301SQ-F4EJ Kai taking off.By taking the photo at a "waterway photography point" that existed at the time, I was able to get a shot of the F4 with its landing gear raised regardless of the wind direction (using a 400mm lens)

This is a photo of the 301SQ-F4EJ Kai taken at the RW28 end of JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on May 19, 1998.These are the aircraft that participated in the combat competition that year. This year, there was only an illustration of a spook painted on the air intake vane of the aircraft.

This is a formation takeoff of the 302nd SQ's F4EJ Kai, photographed at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on 1998.04.20 (top) and 1999.05.12 (bottom).Around this time, before the JASDF Combat Skills Competition, the F4EJ Kai of the 302nd SQ from Naha Air Base would fly to Nyutabaru Air Base in advance and train with the F4s from the 301st SQ.

This is a photo of F4EJ No. 318 of 301SQ taken at JASDF-Nyutabaru Air Base on August 26, 1991 (top) and April 27, 1999 (bottom). This aircraft was never upgraded to the "Kai" version, and appears to have remained an F4EJ until the very end at Nyutabaru Air Base.

This is F4EJ-327 photographed at JASDF-Nyutabaru Air Base on October 3rd, 1986, wearing the 301SQ-F4EJ low-visibility paintwork. On this aircraft, the Hinomaru (Japanese flag), serial number and unit markings were made slightly smaller and then oversprayed with Gull Gray.Below is a comparison photo with the same aircraft's standard paintwork.Around this time, about three low-visibility painted aircraft appeared in Air Self-Defense Force fighter units across the country.

This is a 301SQ-F4EJ Kai taking off, photographed at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on December 3, 1996 (top photo) and May 12, 1999 (bottom photo). In the background of these photos, you can see a line of 306SQ-F4EJs (top photo) that had flown in from Komatsu Air Base to train with units at Nyutabaru Air Base, and a line of parked 302SQ-F4EJs(bottom photo) that had flown in from Naha Air Base.

These photos were taken at JASDF-Nyutabaru Air Base in September 2000 of the 301SQ-F4EJ Kai taking off.In the background of the photo you can see an F15J with the 202SQ's commemorative livery.A ceremony was held on 26 September 2000 to commemorate the disbandment of the 202SQ from Nyutabaru Air Base. On this day, the aircraft with the commemorative livery made its farewell flight.

The 301SQ-F4EJ No. 415, belonging to JASDF-Nyutabaru Air Base, had a rather flashy paint job for the JASDF-Air Combat Skills Competition in November 1989 (first photo). After that, this aircraft flew with the shark mouth and the "Amigo" lettering on the fuselage erased (second and third photos, taken on February 27, 1990).Before the 1990 JASDF-Air Combat Skills Competition, the shark mouth and the five red stars representing the 5th Air Wing were restored to the No. 415 again (fourth photo).

This is JASDF-F4EJkai No. 415, which I posted on this Phantom fan site "IN FLIGHT F-4 PHANTOM" yesterday. On October 30, 2024, I went to see this aircraft, which was on display at the "Metase no Mori" local product center in Chikujo Town, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, near JASDF-Tsuiki Base. This aircraft flew at JASDF-Hyakuri Base until the end of 2020, and was exhibited at this product center on June 27, 2021 after being retired. The exterior of the aircraft was quite faded. But it was spending the rest of its days quietly in a corner of a quiet park surrounded by a well-maintained, beautiful forest.
