This is a comparison of the left and right camouflage of 301SQ's F4EJ Kai-398, photographed at JASDF Nyutabaru Base on November 24, 1992.
This aircraft was a 301Sq faker (F1 fighter role) used for training in that year's combat competition.

This photo was taken on March 4th, 2004 at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base, of 8SQ-F4EJ Kai No. 439 (nicknamed "Yosaku" by Japanese enthusiasts).
8SQ used the F4EJ from 1997 to 2009 to fill the gap until the deployment of the F-2, due to the decline in F-1 fighter aircraft.

This photo was taken at Nyutabaru Air Base on October 2nd, 2002, of an F4EJ Kai of 301SQ taking off with live AIM9L ammunition.
It may have been a missile firing training exercise.

This was at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on May 9th, 1994.An early morning takeoff by 301SQ-F4EJ Kai.The Faker for that year's Air Defense Command Combat Skills Competition had already been released.Following 1992, this year too the entire aircraft was painted in the camouflage of two F1 fighter planes. The vertical sections of the camouflaged aircraft this year were painted in the F1 silhouette to make it look like an F1 fighter plane.

This photograph was taken at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base, showing an RF4EJ of the 501st SQ flying in from Hyakuri Air Base equipped with Sidewinder missiles (dummy).

According to an aircraft website, the RF-4EJ was created by modifying an F-4EJ fighter aircraft into a reconnaissance type.
The RF-4EJ is characterized by the fact that it is equipped with three types of reconnaissance devices on the underside of the fuselage: a Tactical Reconnaissance Pod (TAC), a Long-Range Reconnaissance Pod (LOLOP), and a Tactical Electronic Reconnaissance Pod (TACER).
Another difference from the RF-4E is that by being a modified fighter aircraft, the 20mm Vulcan cannon mounted on the nose and the ability to operate air-to-air missiles remain intact.

This photo was taken of the taxiing of 301SQ-F4EJ Kai at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on June 20th, 1994.This aircraft was painted to participate in the 1994 JASDF Combat Skills Competition.Over the normal gull gray (old) official paintwork, a bluish gray was oversprayed onto the aircraft to resemble the new air superiority paintwork.Visibility was very good that day, and the Kirishima Mountains (an active volcano) could be seen in the background.

This photo was taken of 301SQ's F4EJ Kai taking off early in the morning at the JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base Air Show held on December 4, 1994.
The takeoff was so fast that I couldn't get the photo in focus.

This is the 301Sq-F4EJKai photographed at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base in May 1995.These are aircraft painted for participation in the 1995 JASDF Combat Skills Competition. There were three different painted F4EJ aircraft: an old official gull gray aircraft (No. 375), an old official paint job with overspray (No. 384), and a new air superiority official paint job (No. 425).

The first photo is a frontal shot of 301SQ's F4EJ Kai, taken at Nyutabaru Air Base on June 29, 1995.

However, even when viewed from the front, it is impossible to see the aircraft number on the JASDF's F4EJ.

Only once have I seen a 301SQ-F4EJ aircraft with the aircraft number written on the nose landing gear cover, like a U.S. Air Force F-15 (second photo taken on June 10, 2002).
As a photography enthusiast, this made me very happy, but unfortunately it was quickly deleted.

These aircraft still had the camouflage paint scheme used in the 1984 JASDF Combat Skills Competition.

The first photo was taken at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on December 19, 1995, and shows 301SQ's F4EJ Kai-308 landing.

This aircraft is one of 12 that were knockdown-produced by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries using parts imported from McDonnell's St. Louis factory.

On the vertical stabilizer, there are still traces of the large white-tailed eagle mark from the 302SQ era where it had been erased.

(JASDF has a rule that "the unit markings of fighter planes must be smaller than the Hinomaru (Japanese flag)" on the aircraft. However, the 302SQ was allowed to make an exception to this. This is one of the reasons why the 302SQ's F4EJs were popular with aircraft enthusiasts. See the second photo.)

This is 301SQ-F4EJ Kai , photographed at JSDF Nyutabaru Air Base on May 8, 1995.The aircraft was painted in preparation for that year's Air Defense Command Combat Skills Competition. The big V on the back is said to represent the "5" of the 5th Air Wing to which 301Sq belongs, and also the "V" for victory.

This is an F4 of 301SQ photographed at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on January 29th, 1996.

The photo above is an F4EJ. It was not upgraded to a "Kai" but was painted in the new official air superiority camouflage.
The photo below shows an F4EJ Kai that still has the old official gull gray paint.
The two can be distinguished externally by the presence or absence of a circle. The "Kai" is additionally equipped with a long antenna on the fuselage in the circle and an antenna on the end of the vertical stabilizer.
The F4EJ continued to perform missions that the "Kai" could not perform, such as towing dart targets, until around 2001.

This is an F4EJ Kai of 302SQ fitted with anti-ship missiles that arrived from Naha Air Base to the JASDF's Nyutabaru Base on February 21, 1995.

At the time, I rarely saw an F4EJ fitted with anti-ship missiles, so I was very happy.

This photograph of F4EJ-419 of the 301st SQ taking off was taken at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on December 19, 1995.
At that time, the F4EJs that were not upgraded to the "Kai" version were towing missile targets and dart targets that could not be converted to the "F4EJ Kai".
All F4EJs were retired by around 2001.

These are 301SQ's F4EJ Kai, painted for the 1992 JASDF Combat Skill Competition, photographed at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on August 21, 1992.

The camouflage paintwork on these 301SQ aircraft was a gray cloud pattern to accommodate the cloudy airspace, as the JASDF Combat Skill Competition was held during Japan's long rainy season.
The cloud pattern air superiority camouflage on each aircraft varied in its paint pattern. The first to be painted, and the one that was most faithful to the original pattern, was No. 437.

This is F4EJ Kai from 301SQ who participated in the JASDF combat skills competition held at Nyutabaru Air Base in late May 1997.
That year, all participating aircraft had the shark mouth design on the nose and the 301SQ's traditional V mark on the fuselage.
