This is a 301SQ-F4EJ
Kai photographed at Nyutabaru Air Base on May 22,
1996.
The air intake splitter vanes of these 301SQ F4EJ
Kai had illustrations painted on them to boost
morale for the 1996 JASDF Combat Skills
Competition.
It seems that 301SQ's call sign at the time was
"Jason."
Perhaps with this in mind, the illustration shows
"Jason," the main character from the
horror movie "Friday the 13th,"
stabbing the opponent AGR's symbol, the "red
star," and its aircraft with a hatchet.

This photo of 301SQ-F4EJ
Kai taking off was taken at JASDF Nyutabaru Air
Base on March 11, 1996. (A shot taken directly
from the side with a 300mm lens).
Around this time, the F4EJ's official livery was
being changed, so there was a mixture of both
liveries at Nyutabaru Air Base. |

This photograph
was taken at the end of May 1997 at JASDF
Nyutabaru Air Base, of 302SQ-F4EJ Kai No. 440,
which flew in from Naha Air Base.
The air intake splitter vanes of this 302SQ-F4EJ
Kai were decorated with an illustration of a
white-tailed eagle to boost morale at the 1997
JASDF Combat Skills Competition.
This F4-440 was the last F4 produced in the world
(No. 5195), and is affectionately known by many
Japanese fans as "Shishimaru = Lion King." |

These are F4EJ/EJKai
fitted with targets for machine gun firing,
photographed at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base.
The first photo shows 301Sq's F4EJ No. 393 fitted
with a dart target (photographed on January 26th,
1998).
The second photo shows 301Sq's F4EJ Kai No. 424
fitted with an A/A37U-36 (photographed on April
16th, 1998).
From around this time, at Nyutabaru Air Base, the
dart targets were fitted to the F4EJs, and the A/A37U-36
targets were fitted to the F4EJ Kai for training. |

The 304th SQ,
attached to JASDF Tsuiki Base, was formed in
August 1977 when it received the F4EJ.
1987 marked the 10th anniversary of the 304th SQ's
formation.
To commemorate this, three commemorative
illustrations were painted on the air intake
splitter vanes of the 304th SQ's F4EJ.
The first and second photos are pre-commemorative
illustrated marks photographed at the Tsuiki Base
Air Show on November 16th, 1986.
The third and fourth photos are commemorative
illustrated marks photographed at the Tsuiki Base
Air Show on November 15th, 1987. |

Kai of 301SQ, photographed at JASDF Nyutabaru
Base on November 7, 2011.
At that time, Nyutabaru Base was undergoing
repair work on the main runway, and a temporary
runway was in use. Because the temporary runway
was located along the base fence, aircraft taking
off overflowed from the camera frame. |

This is a photo
of an F4EJ Kai of 301SQ taking off at JASDF
Nyutabaru Air Base on April 23, 2012.
The 305th aircraft had a missile target attached
to its underside. Following this aircraft, two F4EJ
Kai equipped with Sidewinders (live ammunition)
took off.
This 305th aircraft is the third oldest of the 12
knockdown-produced F4EJs by Mitsubishi Heavy
Industries, following the two F4EJs that JASDF
imported directly from the US. I was surprised
that this aircraft had been modified to an F4EJ
Kai, and that even an F4EJ Kai could be equipped
with a missile target.
By the way, when I saw this aircraft on August 1,
2016, it had already been disassembled and only
the vertical tail was on display at Nyutabaru Air
Base (fourth photo). |

This photograph
of 301Sq's F4EJ modified No.404 was taken at
JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base in June 2001.
This aircraft was painted to participate in the
2001 combat skills competition. There are two
stars on the air intake vane, so it is the team's
leader aircraft.
The shark mouth on the nose has been painted in a
three-dimensional way. Also, the colour of the
shark's eyes is red. The colour of these eyes was
different for each participating aircraft.
In an old Japanese saying, it is believed that
colours also have souls, and that our souls
receive their power. For example, red: leader,
hot-blooded. Blue: intelligent, cool. Yellow:
cheerful, mood maker. Green: balancer. And so on. |

The unit's Woodpecker bow tie is yellow, but at

seems to have been a small way of showing the
enthusiasm and pride that each maintenance
squadron took in their work. |
