These photos of the 301SQ-F4EJ Kai taking off were taken at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on September 26, 2006.

Prior to the JASDF Combat Skills Competition in October 2006, a shark mouth was painted on the nose to boost morale.

The photo above is of F4EJ No. 318 of 301SQ, taken at JASDF Nyutabaru Base on August 26th, 1991.
This aircraft was not upgraded to the "Kai" version.
The photo below is of No. 318, taken on February 22nd, 2001.
All F4EJs in JASDF's fighter units were retired in March 2001.
As a result, this shot was the last F4EJ that I saw.

These are 301st SQ's F4EJ Kai, Nos. 408 and 421, photographed at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on 23rd May 2000.
That was the first time I saw an F4EJ Kai fitted with what appeared to be the Air Combat Maneuver Instrument pod often fitted to AGR's F15DJs and US military F15Cs.
However, after that I only managed to see an F4EJ Kai fitted with this ACMI pod just once more.

This is F4EJ Kai 319 of 302SQ belonging to Naha AB, photographed at JASDF Nyutabaru AB on October 26, 2006.
This aircraft had an illustration on its nose from its participation in the Air Defense Command Warfare Competition that year.
A close-up of the illustration of the air intake vanes shows, to my surprise, two Spooks chokehold and then beat up their opponent's AGR F15.

This photograph was taken at the Nyutabaru Air Base Air Show held on November 26th, 1989, of F4EJs from 301SQ taking off in formation.
It's hard to tell because the aircraft are overlapping, but if you look closely you can see that they are taking off in formation of three aircraft.
At the time, I had only seen three F4s taking off in formation at air shows, so I wasn't sure how to compose the photo, so I played it safe and took a straight-on shot with a 70-210mm zoom lens.
In the background, you can see a line of Amigo painted F4EJs lined up.

This is F4EJ No. 371 of the 301st SQ, which is attached to the JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base. This aircraft participated in the JASDF combat competition in 1990. The competition was likely a gun shooting competition, as this aircraft, No. 371, was painted with an illustration of a shark's mouth holding a dart target in its mouth. On the left side of the aircraft was a shark's mouth holding a dart part with many bullet holes in it, and on the right side was a shark's mouth with the tip of a dart protruding from it. It was a very interesting illustration and became a hot topic among enthusiasts at the time.
